superflex SBS "Systems Excellence" · Superflex SBS products are reinforced with a heavy fiberglass or various weight polyester sheets, ranging from 180 to 250 gsm· Fully modified with SBS for superior strength, flexibility and fatigue resistance· Application flexibility with hot asphalt and cold adhesive · Approved by Underwriters Lab and Factory Mutual and complies with CGSB-37GP-56M
DESCRIPTION: superflex SBS membrane is reinforced with either a high tensile heavy 180-250 gsm spunbond polyester mat for exceptional strength or a heavy fiberglass mat for multi-ply applications. Product is modified with SBS, a synthetic rubber. These membranes have high multi-directional strength, excellent cold temperature flexibility, elongation and recall properties far superior to traditional asphalt roofing membranes. These outstanding qualities provide superflex SBS with unusual resistance to "thermal shock", a major contributor to roof failure. superflex SBS Premium 250 has exceptional tear and puncture resistance and is recommended as flashing sheet for extended warranties. USAGE: superflex SBS cap membranes are used in a variety of applications as a top ply or as flashing detail. The superflex SBS - Premium 250 is used in applications where a high tensile strength material is required due to excessive thermal shock or deck movement. The glass reinforced superflex is used for multi-ply applications generally with a minimum 60 lb. interply layer. The smooth surfaced superflex SBS is used in extended warranted systems or as a cap sheet in coated systems. STORAGE: Material should be stored on end, in a dry location. Assure that materials are kept clean, and away from excessive heat or cold; do not remove labels or tear off protective covering until ready for application; store in an enclosed area where temperature is above 55° F and below 90° F. Material shall not be stored directly on the ground. Pallets should not be stored more than two high without protective bracing. APPLICATION Surface Preparation: All decks must be firm, solid, free of sharp edges or depressions, moisture or any effects of freezing. Decks should support all anticipated deck loads to avoid damage from load induced deck movements. Slope Requirements: For slopes greater than 1/2" per foot; run all membranes parallel to the incline. Fasten the cap membrane on the leading edge, using staggered pattern 6" on center; side laps fastened 2" from edge, 12" o.c. All fasteners should be mopped over with asphalt and lapped by the next cap sheet. Cut the membranes to length as follows: 1/2"- 2" per foot slope 17' 2"- 3" per foot slope 11' Hot Asphalt: Hot Asphalt application of SBS membranes is similar to standard application of BUR cap membranes. Hot asphalt application is not recommended when ambient temperatures are below 50° F, as asphalt temperature can quickly drop below the minimum point of application temperature of 425° F. Residual moisture in the substrate and roofing materials can be trapped in the system and can cause blistering. Do not apply roofing during precipitation, or when decks are wet from water, snow or frost. Do not kick out rolls into hot asphalt. MBTechnology requires the use of Type III asphalt on inclines up to 1/2" and Type IV asphalt on slopes of 1/2" or greater. Asphalt should never be heated above its flash point. The ideal application temperature is the EVT temperature printed on the package. A deviation of 25° F above or below the EVT is acceptable. Apply asphalt at a rate of 25 lb. per square. Brooming is required to eliminate voids or air pockets. A 1/4" extrusion of asphalt is required to assure seam integrity. Cold Adhesive: All cold adhesives or roofing cements should comply with ASTM D 3019 Type III requirements. Cold adhesives should be applied at ambient temperatures above 50° F. Special precautions should be taken for applications in cooler climates to insure even distribution of adhesive. Avoid flames in the presence of cold adhesive fumes. Adhesive must be applied in smooth and even continuos layer without voids or breaks at a rate of 1 1/2 gallons per square or per manufacturers recommendation. Excessive adhesive will damage the membrane. TECHNICAL SERVICES Latest copy of MBTechnology's specification manual must be referenced prior to any application.
